Although Indiana gambling laws allow payers to place wagers on riverboat casinos and horse racing; many other types of gaming in the states are still prohibited. So, read on below and find out all there is to know about Indiana gambling.
Popular Live Indiana Gambling
The initial casinos in Indiana were obligated to be river-boats on the Ohio and Lake Michigan. Consequently, this law has been laid off now since the gambling industry then extended to lakes and racinos. There are currently twelve casinos in Indiana where players can choose to gamble from, from South Indiana all the way up to the northern side, close to Illinois.
Indiana also has a state lottery and it’s known as the Hoosier lottery. This lottery has excites games such as the typical scratchies and other popular lotto games like Bingo and Keno. However, the most popular lottery games in Indiana are Powerball and Mega Millions and the most famous state drawings include Quick Draw, Cash 5, and Poker Lotto.
In addition to this, they also have a sports betting industry and horse racing industry called Indiana Garand & Hoosier Park where they offer players live horseraces to place bets on. They also have off-track betting on races that are broadcasted at the facilities. There are different charities that also offer games of chance but holding proper licenses and these include casino nights, pull-tabs, raffles, bingos, and door prizes. However, the charities are required to register with the state first if they want to offer these games.
Indiana Gambling Laws
The state’s gambling laws are quite liberal as one would argue that there’s still a lot of illegal gambling that happens in the state. Anything that is related to casino gambling in Indiana must be regulated by the state’s gambling commission known as the Indiana Gambling Commission. Their duty is to monitor all the racetracks, casinos, giving out gambling licenses, as well as ensuring that all the players are protected. In Indiana, the state’s definition of gambling is anything valuable that is:
“contingent in whole or in part upon lot, chance, or the operation of a gambling device,” but exempts “bona fide contests of skill, speed, strength, or endurance in which awards are made only to entrants or the owners of entries.”
More so, there are other casino gambling laws that specifically cater to online casinos. These laws target the games of chance as well as bookmarkers. This is classified under Class D felony – one of the many harsh penalties in the US states. However, the gamblers aren’t the subject of this online gaming restriction.
In Indiana, charities must also register for them to offer gambling services regardless of their motive. A certain fee must be paid to the state by the charity organization together with the distributor of the gambling games on offer. The fees typically range from US$500 to $5 000; and this depends on nature of course. For most of the game, the prizes will not be more than USD$5 000 though punchboards and pull up tabs have USD$599 as their maximum value.
Lastly, but most importantly, for all the casino players in Indiana the minimum gambling age is 21. However, with some other types of gambling, the minimum is 18 years.
