How to Play Razz Cards Strategically
Before we can get started with providing you with the best razz poker strategy, it’s essential that we run you through how the game is played first. The game follows a similar structure to seven-card stud; the only difference between the two variations is the way the hand strength is determined. So, in razz poker, the lowest 5-card hand wins, whereas in seven-card stud it’s the opposite; the highest 5-card hand wins.
So, to get started, each player on the table will be dealt two cards face down (hole cards) and one card face up (door card). If you get the highest number value door card, you must post the bring in, which is a forced bet or a full-sized bet before you reach the 4th street.
If two or more players have the highest door card, then the bring in will be determined by suits. Once all the betting is completed, the face up 4th street card will be dealt to each player and the one player with the lowest showing hand has to act first.
Thereafter, the 5th street will be dealt and the bet size for the remainder of the hand doubles. The 6th street is also dealt face up and thereafter is the 7th street which is dealt face down. If you’ve started the betting round on the 6th street, then you get to act first on 7th street.
Best Hand in Razz Poker
The best hand in razz poker is the lowest hand value, which is an Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5. This is also known as a wheel. Flushes and straights do not count in this variation.
It’s important that you pay attention to all cards dealt face up as this will determine your chances of winning against your opponents. Since aces are low in razz, the King is the worst door card to hold.
Razz Poker Strategy and Tips to Win
The best strategy in razz poker would to be wary about your starting hand. For instance, 32A is the strongest hand to start with and so is any other starting hand with cards that are in the wheel.
It is also as important to check what face up cards your opponents have. If they have similar cards to you or actually higher cards, then that’s okay. But it’s bad if they have cards that you actually want to draw.
Also, to win at razz poker, whether you’re playing online or offline, you will need to understand the value of stealing the antes and bring ins, regardless of what stakes you’re playing. You do this when players with the highest door cards fold. If they don’t then you must know that this means their hole cards are good. Forcing your opponents to fold is one of your most valuable tools.
