Source of Funds and Source of Wealth Are Two Different Questions

Updated MobileCasinos24 desk

Two questions, "which of your accounts did the casino deposit come from?" and "how do you have $1,100 to begin with?" sound the same, especially when you are on the phone with someone who wants you to describe your account statement and year-end tax return. They are not, however, and answering the wrong one will leave you with an account limited while the casino waits for the one that was actually needed.

Two questions that sound like one

The first, "source of funds", is an account question. It asks where this deposit came from, showing how this specific sum reached your casino balance. The second, "source of wealth", asks for the lifetime picture: answering it means showing how your household built up its assets, including how you acquired your income and property over the years. The two do not add up, and you need both sets of documents at hand.

Test it on your potential answers. Any document like a bank statement, pay statement or sales settlement that tracks this money from an account to the casino is “source of funds” evidence: it shows this deposit leaving that account. On the other hand, if your document names a month and a year, not a single day; if it reports your gross income, residence, assets or business; and if it traces money into your overall wealth, not out of a specific account — it is "source of wealth" evidence. The casino will wait for the one it asked for, and have a restriction running on your account while it waits.

Why a casino asks at all

Casinos are bound by the Bank Secrecy Act, the same law the bank and credit union are. The casino is considered a financial institution, and it is as regulated as the bank itself. That means it must have a fully formed anti-money-laundering programme, the same as a bank would, and that programme is why the casino is analysing your paperwork and will expect further sources of funds for the next cookies, chips and reloads.

Even though you are transferring from a debit card, or making sure your pin code is encrypted, that's not the part the casino is checking: it's the human, not tech, sources of money, since tech is readily gamed when it comes to the occasional sanction-blinked funds. The reason an analysis is applied to the user, rather than the payment linked to the credit card or electronic wallet, is that cash transactions are where the regulatory risk plays out, not carded deposits, so the focus is on cash transactions. Card deposits are not the transactions that count: that's why funds inquiries are for the depositors, not the payment companies.

So it is not a data leak, but an anti-fraud and anti-money-laundering form. It might seem like overkill, if you were looking at your phone deposits and comparing them to cash-cage reports: those are the transactions that get reported as currency transactions, but not by a phone transfer. In the US, though, there is no EV gambling jurisdiction — the seven states only license limited-field casinos in a F2F setting — so the report is made directly from the poker floor. Phone play is what interests regulators least. Still, the operation must be done from the beginning: anti-money-laundering reviews begin as soon as the customer starts to place a bet. As always, take a look at the company's privacy page (though never under the assumption that the casino is using your phone deposits for anything positive, since chipping analysis is an integral part of A casino's game-model risk review and is there to target campaigns and incentives on the most spendable players).

Which paper answers which question

To answer the first question, "where did this specific sum come from?" have ready records of a movement of money from an account to your spending balance. Your evidence should be able to describe how this exact sum travelled from your bank, to your e-wallet, and then to the casino. That means:

- a bank statement that shows this money leaving an account for the casino transfer — a pay statement showing the casino payment has been taken out of your paycheck — a sales agreement showing the purchase of an item which you sold, and the casino payment as you cashed that sale

To answer the second question, "how did you build up this level of cash holdings?" have papers that describe the formation of your overall assets, showing how your financial hierarchy grew into what the casino now sees. That means:

- a tax return showing your gross income, address, property and business structure — a property-selling closing statement naming you as owner, your sale price, and the sum you received as profit — an inheritance document naming you as a beneficiary, showing the relation of the deceased, the value of the estate, and the sum you received from the distribution — business tax and trade reports showing licensed trading, and the value of your business enterprise

The request can not be satisfied by documents that describe a movement of assets in general, rather than the specific fund. A property sale will do, but a property insurance statement will not. A regular wage-earning statement shows your source of wealth, but is not concrete evidence of this specific deposit in particular (the only wage documents that are source of funds are those showing the actually sent deposit).

What happens while the answer is outstanding

An account restriction is when the casino restricts play. You are held from making further deposits, and you can not get your casino balance paid out, even though the balance is still there. It is not the same as account closure, and restricted does not mean that you are fighting to prove that your money is yours. Your money is yours, and most restrictions unblock as soon as the casino receives the documents it has asked for. The restriction is a limit on your access, rather than the permanence of holding back your money.

Have the documents ready, then, or consider whether it's important to you to keep up the flow. Other operators may suit you better, and even accept another operator's paper stranger than the one you just used to validate that $200 poker sweepstakes. Know that not all the requests are answered with a minimum statement, though: overtime, article of association and tax assessments may all be expected.

Keep in mind that the questions may be asked again, even if you answered the first. It's not that the casino thinks you lost the paperwork or that it made a mistake in not finding what it was after. The two questions are separate, and may be asked multiple time as you play.

Questions about money sources mean the operator is running a core function, not treating you as an oddity. The casino, under the same law as the bank, is doing an anti-money-laundering review: don't hate on the process, do everything you can to keep it open.
